Fernco Magnum Coupling
Useful Information
What is a Magnum Coupling Used For?
The Fernco (previously known as Flexseal) Magnum Coupling, is a robust solution designed for connecting two pipes where a cut section has left a pipe end severely uneven or not square to the axis of the pipe. This coupling is essential for adopted sewer and drainage applications, especially in scenarios requiring extra strength due to uneven pipe cuts. It's tailored to meet the requirements of UK water companies.
Key Features
- Extra Strength and Stability: Equipped with additional bolts to provide extra strength and stability in challenging connections.
- Shear Band Protection: Includes a stainless steel shear band to protect the joint under heavy loads and maintain pipe alignment.
- Wide Application Range: Suitable for connecting pipes with diameters starting from 300mm, accommodating a wide range of sizes.
- High Pressure Resistance: Capable of handling varying pressure levels, up to a maximum of 4 bar.
- Easy Installation: Designed for straightforward fitting, even in complex scenarios.
Specifications
- Size Range: Available for pipe diameters of 300mm and above.
- Width: The coupling has a width of 370mm, providing extensive coverage.
- Bolting System: Features an M8 13mm bolt system for secure fastening.
- Pressure Ratings: Varies by size, with ratings from 1 bar to 4 bar.
- Material: Made from EPDM and 1.4301 (304) Stainless Steel. Options for different materials are available upon request.
- Temperature Range: Suitable for temperatures from -50°C to 80°C continuously, and up to 100°C intermittently.
- Jetting Resistance: Resistant to jetting pressures up to 180 bar.
- Standards Compliance: Meets WIS 4-41-01, BS EN 681-1:1996, BS EN 295-4:2013, and BS EN 10088-2:1995.

How and Where to Install a Magnum Coupling
Installing the Fernco Magnum Coupling involves:
- Marking for Alignment
Mark both pipes to be connected, measuring half the width of the coupling from the end of each pipe, minus the required joint gap (usually around 10mm). - Coupling Positioning
2a. If connecting two pipes, slide the coupling fully over one of the pipes.
2b. If replacing a cut section of pipe, slide the couplings over each of the existing drain pipes. - Aligning and Securing First Pipe
Align the first pipe and slide the coupling onto it, ensuring the coupling face is flush with the marked line. Tighten the clamp band on this end of the coupling. - Positioning the Second Pipe
Position the second pipe so that the coupling face and the marked line are flush. Tighten the clamp band on this side of the coupling. - Final Tightening and Bedding
Tighten all clamp bands to the recommended torque in sequence, starting with the central shear band. Tamp the bedding under the pipe for stability and re-tighten the bands as necessary prior to backfilling.
