Fernco Large Standard Coupling
Useful Information
What is a Large Standard Coupling Used For?
The Fernco (previously known as Flexseal) Large Standard Coupling, is specifically designed for connecting and repairing large-diameter pipes in adopted sewer and drainage systems. These couplings are ideal for applications that require compliance with the UK water companies' standards, particularly for joining pipes in systems where shear loads and pipe alignment are key concerns.
This coupling is used to connect two plain-ended pipes above 400mm in diameter, typically in scenarios where drainage lines are being extended and socket connections are not present. It is particularly recommended for connections to concrete pipes above 400mm.
Key Features
- Shear Band Protection: Equipped with a stainless steel shear band to provide added protection against shear loads and maintain pipe alignment.
- Custom Fit: Each coupling is made to order, ensuring a perfect fit for the specific pipe diameters involved.
- High Torque Bolts: Features unique high torque bolts to maximize contact pressure and secure a reliable seal.
- Reduced Excavation Needs: Offers a practical solution for pipe connection and repair with less excavation compared to replacing full pipe lengths.
Specifications
- Size Range: Available for pipe diameters of 400mm and above.
- Width: Each coupling has a width of 190mm.
- Material Composition: Made from EPDM and 1.4301 (304) Stainless Steel.
- Pressure Ratings: Varies by size, with ratings from 0.5bar (7.25psi) for sizes above 1400mm, up to 2.5bar (36.25psi) for sizes between 400mm and 500mm.
- Temperature Range: Suitable for continuous use in temperatures from -50°C to 80°C, and intermittent use up to 100°C.
- Jetting Resistance: Can withstand jetting pressures up to 180 bar.
- Standards Compliance: Approved to WIS 4-41-01, BS EN 681-1:1996, BS EN 295-4:2013, and BS EN 10088-2:1995.

Note: Large Diameter Couplings are made bespoke to the exact requirements of the connection. ‘Size Manufactured Within’ in the table above is an indication of what size each coupling can be manufactured within. If a connection over 1000mm is required, we would always recommend an Extra Wide Large Coupling or Magnum Coupling.
How and Where to Install a Standard Coupling
Installation of the Fernco Large Standard Coupling involves:
- Measuring Pipes: Determine the outside diameter and material of the pipes to be connected.
- Coupling Selection: Choose a coupling based on the size range and specific project needs.
- Positioning the Coupling: Slide the coupling over the ends of the two pipes to be connected.
- Securing the Connection: Tighten the high torque bolts using the provided 13mm socket with 3/8” square drive to ensure a strong and reliable seal.
