Fernco Extra Wide Standard Coupling
Useful Information
What is an Extra Wide Standard Coupling Used For?
The Fernco Extra Wide Standard Coupling is specifically designed for robust, reliable connections in sewer and drainage applications. It is particularly effective for connecting two plain-ended pipes where an extended sealing zone is required. This includes connections to twinwall pipes, creating a seal over more ribs, or when greater pipe deflection is needed than what standard couplings provide. It is ideal for applications where standard couplings are not sufficient, particularly in larger pipe diameters or challenging environmental conditions.
Key Features
- Enhanced Width and Sealing Capacity: With a width of 300mm, it provides an extended sealing zone, crucial for certain applications such as twinwall pipe connections.
- High-Pressure Resistance: Capable of withstanding an internal pressure of up to 2.5 bar, ensuring durability and reliability in demanding situations.
- Stainless Steel Shear Band: This feature helps in maintaining pipe alignment and preventing pipe displacement under shear loads.
- Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of pipe diameters from 200mm to 620mm, making it a versatile choice for various project requirements.
- High-Quality Materials: Comprised of EPDM and 1.4301 (304) Stainless Steel, providing a strong and durable connection.

How and Where to Install an Extra Wide Standard Coupling?
- Marking Pipes: Mark both pipes half the width of the coupling minus the required joint gap (usually 10mm) from their ends to be connected.
- Coupling Placement: If connecting two pipes, slide the coupling fully over one of them. For replacing a cut section, slide couplings over both existing drain pipes.
- Alignment and Tightening: Align the pipes, ensuring the coupling faces and marked lines are flush. Tighten the clamp band on the coupling.
- Securing Second Pipe: Position the second pipe, align it similarly, and tighten the clamp band.
- Final Tightening: Tighten all clamp bands to the recommended torque in sequence across the width of the coupling, starting with the central shear band. Tamp the bedding under the pipe and re-tighten prior to backfilling.
