What is a Unisaddle Used For?

The Fernco Unisaddle, previously known as Flexseal Unisaddle, is designed for connecting lateral pipes into larger concrete pipelines with diameters of DN450 and above. This product is ideal for creating new junctions in existing sewer or surface water systems, such as integrating lateral pipes from new buildings or infrastructure into main pipelines, without extensive excavation.

Key Features

  • Universal Design: Capable of connecting various sizes and brands of pipes, creating permanent, reliable watertight seals.
  • WRc Approval: Recognized by UK Water Authorities, ensuring compliance with high standards and quality.
  • Easy Installation: Requires minimal excavation, a simple core hole creation, and saddle connection, significantly reducing labour and material costs.
  • Shear Support: Incorporates shear support to withstand substantial loads, ensuring durability and reliability.
  • Deflection Tolerance: Accepts a deflection of up to 15° on the lateral pipe, offering installation flexibility.

Specifications

  • Main Pipe Size: Suitable for concrete pipes with diameters of DN450 and above.
  • Lateral Pipe Sizes: Accommodates DN150 and DN200 lateral pipes.
  • Material Composition: Made from EPDM, ABS plastic, and 1.4301 (304) Stainless Steel.
  • Pressure and Vacuum Ratings: Rated for 1 bar / 14.50 psi pressure and a vacuum of -0.25 (-0.3) bar.
  • Vertical Load Capacity: Can support up to 20Kn (approx 2 tonnes).
  • Temperature Range: Suitable for temperatures from -50°C to 80°C continuously, and up to 100°C intermittently.
  • Standards Compliance: Meets BS EN 681-1, BS EN 295-3, BS EN 295-4, BS EN 10088-2, WIS 4-35-01.

How and Where to Install a Unisaddle

Installation of the Fernco Unisaddle (DN450+) involves:

  1. Core Drilling the Pipe:

Start by diamond coring a hole into the main concrete pipe. For the FA150B Unisaddle, drill a hole of 172mm, and for the FA200B Unisaddle, drill a hole of 232mm.
Ensure that the pipe wall and surrounding area are clean and free from slurry or debris.
Measure the wall thickness of the pipe to determine the correct depth for saddle placement.

  2. Preparing the Saddle:

Remove the internal locking sleeve from the saddle body.
Adjust the threaded collar on the outer sleeve of the saddle. Set it to be 10mm less than the thickness of the main pipe's wall. This adjustment is crucial for a secure fit.

  3. Positioning the Saddle:

Place the saddle in the newly created hole.
Ensure that it is positioned correctly by maintaining a 10mm gap between the saddle and the internal wall of the main pipe.
You can verify this by placing your hand inside the pipe and feeling for the inner pipe wall.

  4. Inserting the Locking Sleeve:

Break off the tabs from the locking sleeve.
Lubricate the sleeve using Fernco Pipe Lubricant for easier insertion.
Place the locking sleeve into the saddle body, lining up the arrows for proper orientation.
Push the sleeve into the bore of the saddle.

  5. Locking the Saddle into Position:

Drive the locking sleeve evenly around the circumference until it is fully locked in place.
It is recommended to use a wooden block when hammering the saddle into position to avoid damaging it.
If needed, add water to ease the locking sleeve into the saddle.

  6. Inserting the Lateral Pipe:

Once the saddle is securely locked into place, insert the lateral pipe (along with a Fernco Multibush if required for smaller diameter pipes).
Tighten the clamp band on the saddle to the recommended torque of 6Nm to ensure a secure and watertight connection.

Note: When coring a hole of 172mm or 232mm, ensure that you use the correct equipment. If rebar is exposed during the process, it is recommended that the rebar is sealed before installing the saddle to maintain the integrity of the installation.
