Fernco Icon Mechanical Internal Coupling
Useful Information
What is an Internal Mechanical Coupling Used For?
The Fernco (previously known as Flexseal) Icon Mechanical Internal Coupling is specifically designed for connecting rainwater and wastewater pipelines using their internal surface. This coupling is ideal for situations where pipes are encased in concrete, surrounded by brick, or cut flush with a floor or wall, leaving no external stub for connection. It ensures a strong, permanent connection while maintaining a smooth flow within the pipeline.
Key Features
- Versatile Internal Connection: Connects pipes internally, perfect for difficult or restricted external access scenarios.
- Unique Design for Smooth Flow: Tapered edges and thin walls minimize bore reduction, promoting natural flow within the pipe.
- High-Quality Materials: Comprised of EPDM and 1.4301 (304) Stainless Steel, ensuring durability and reliability.
- Easy Installation: Simple to install using everyday tools, with no requirement for external pipe exposure.
- Pressure and Load Resistant: Provides excellent resistance to lateral shear loads and is pressure-rated up to 2.5 bar (36.25 psi).
Specifications
- Size Range: Suitable for connecting pipes with internal diameters from 150mm to 600mm.
- Material: Made of EPDM and 1.4301 (304) Stainless Steel, ensuring robust performance.
- Pressure Rating: Capable of withstanding up to 2.5 bar (36.25 psi).
- Jetting Resistance: Resistant to jetting pressures up to 180 bar.
- Temperature Range: Effective from -50°C to 80°C continuously, and up to 100°C intermittently.
- Tightening Torque: Recommended tightening torque of 15Nm.
- Standards Compliance: Meets WIS 4-41-01, BS EN 681-1:1995, and BS EN 295-4:2013 standards.

How and Where to Install a Mechanical Internal Coupling
Installing the Fernco Icon Mechanical Internal Coupling involves:
- Surface Preparation: Ensure the internal surfaces of the pipes are defect-free. For concrete pipes, lubricate the inside surface.
- Inserting the Coupling: Place the coupling into the end of the already laid pipe, positioning the tightening device(s) correctly.
- Aligning the Coupling: Push the coupling into the pipe until the bolt housing(s) and spacer brackets touch the pipe face.
- Connecting the Second Pipe: Slide the second pipe over the coupling, centre and align it, and push it fully up to the spacer bracket(s) and bolt housing(s).
- Securing the Connection: Tighten the bolt(s) to the specified torque of 15Nm to ensure a secure, watertight seal.
