During the process of manufacture, a thin layer of film is left on the surface of the ABS pipe and in the sockets of the fittings and valves. This has to be removed during assembly and the best way of achieving this is through lightly abrading the surface layer on the pipe and in the sockets. The object is not to remove material but only to roughen up the surface. MEK cleaner shoud then be applied followed by the ABS solvent cement.
